Police are investigating a fatal crash on Country Road 519 that killed a man in Wantage Tuesday evening, January 7.
According to police reports, 23 year-old James Smith from Newton was driving his Toyota Camry on the southbound lanes of Country Road 519 when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing the car to veer off the roadway and crashing into a concrete bridge at around 7:40 p.m. His car continued down an embankment before going up in flames near milepost 79.4.
Smith was declared dead on the scene by emergency responders who arrived at the scene not long after the accident was reported.
No other vehicles or passengers were involved in the crash.

Vehicular Accidents

Speeding was another major contributing factor to these crashes being listed as a factor in 61 of the crashes. Driving while distracted seems to be the biggest factor as it was listed as a cause for 196 crashes.
We urge drivers to observe and follow the laws while driving, and to remain focused while driving so that they can react accordingly to situations that may suddenly pop up on the roadway. Drivers should be more careful when driving while visibility is low, and they should also check their car before going on the roadway. Being more diligent and prepared can help lessen accidents on the roads of New Jersey.
