SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — A driver hit an unmarked New Jersey state police vehicle and multiple other vehicles Wednesday on Interstate 287 in Bridgewater Township, reports WRNJ.
The accident happened on the southbound interstate at milepost 14.2, before Chimney Rock Road. It was first reported at about 5:57 p.m.
According to New Jersey State Police, a trooper was in an unmarked New Jersey state police Ford F-150 pickup truck when they saw a silver Hyundai traveling recklessly in the left lane and shoulder.
The trooper said they tried but failed to get behind the Hyundai, and was entering the left shoulder with the pickup’s overhead lights activated when they were rear-ended by the erratic driver.
Officials said the Hyundai proceeded on I-287 southbound without stopping and collided with several other vehicles.
An investigation later found the driver was suffering from a medical emergency at the time of the crashes. The patient was transported to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries.
The state police continue to investigate.
