OCEAN COUNTY, NJ — An 11-year-old boy was hospitalized Friday, May 26, after being hit by a vehicle while riding a bike in Seaside Heights, according to Daily Voice.

Authorities said the incident occurred on Fremont Avenue at around 6:50 p.m.

A preliminary investigation shows Giancarlos Fernandez, a Hasbrouck Heights resident, was driving a 2012 Infinity G37 westbound at a high rate of speed when the vehicle struck the young cyclist.

The child, who collided with the windshield of the vehicle was thrown onto the pavement, suffered serious injuries. He was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was later listed in stable condition.

The driver, who had exited his car and attempted to flee on foot, was ultimately apprehended by detectives with the Seaside Heights Police Department. After taking field sobriety tests, he was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where a blood draw was obtained on a warrant. He was then booked into Ocean County Jail, where he remains pending a detention hearing. He has since been charged with “Assault by Auto” and “Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Crash with Serious Injuries.”
