UNION COUNTY, NJ — Five teenagers were arrested Wednesday afternoon following a pursuit and rollover crash involving a stolen car in Summit, according to NJ.com.
The Summit Police Department said the events first unfolded on the Route 24 service road near Hobart Avenue at about 4:11 p.m.
Preliminary details indicate officers had observed and started to follow an eastbound 2019 Audi A5, which had been reported stolen from Montclair. At one point, the car abruptly sped up, sideswiping as many as six other cars in the process.
The Audi ultimately overturned about a quarter of a mile before Exit 9A to Broad Street. Moments later, the five occupants, all 16 years old, exited the vehicle and ran east on the highway shoulder and into a PSE&G maintenance yard along Middle Avenue.
Three suspects were soon apprehended and taken into custody by Summit Police, and a fourth was later arrested by an assisting Millburn officer. With the aid of a drone and an established perimeter, the fifth suspect was later taken into custody on Route 78 westbound in Union Township.
The five teens, all Essex County residents, were processed before being released to their guardians as they await court hearings.
