BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A police officer was involved in a fiery crash early Tuesday during a pursuit on New Jersey State Route 5 in Ridgefield, reports Daily Voice.
The collision occurred at the intersection with Broad Avenue, near the Ridgefield Fire Company 1 firehouse, just after 2:30 a.m.
Authorities said an officer was in a police cruiser pursuing two occupants in an Infiniti sedan. At one point, the Infiniti crashed into a traffic light and a utility pole at the intersection. The impact caused the pole to fall onto the cruiser, and at least one of the vehicles caught fire.
Firefighters arrived to find one of the vehicles fully engulfed in flames but were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.
The officer was found to be in OK condition, but the suspects had fled the scene.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Fatal Accident Investigations Unit was initially alerted of the scene due to police involvement in the incident, but the call was ultimately canceled.
PSE&G crew members were called to tend to significant damage in the area.
At this time, authorities have not located the fleeing occupants.
