Woman hit, killed by train near North Elizabeth station

UNION COUNTY, NJ — A woman died late Saturday afternoon after being struck by a NJ Transit train near the North Elizabeth station, reports local media.

NJ Transit officials said the incident occurred at around 4:00 p.m. and involved Northeast Corridor train 7844, which en route to Penn Station New York.

It remains unclear what circumstances led up to the crash, but preliminary details indicate an adult female pedestrian was hit by the train on the tracks near the station and was pronounced deceased.

No other major injuries to the passengers or crew on the train were reported.

The train had departed Trenton at 2:58 p.m. and had been set for a 4:33 p.m. arrival at Penn Station New York, but train traffic was stalled for a significant time as trains were forced to move at a reduced speed following the event.

An ongoing investigation is being handled by the New Jersey Transit Police. No further information has been disclosed as of this writing.
