SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — A 35-year-old woman died Tuesday night after a driver made an improper pass and crashed a vehicle on Interstate 287 in Bridgewater, according to local media.

The wreck occurred on the southbound side of I-287 at mile marker 18.4, near Talamini Road. It was first reported at about 7:33 p.m.

According to New Jersey State Police, a 24-year-old Linden man was driving an Infiniti passenger car southbound when he merged onto the left side of the road to improperly pass a Nissan passenger car, also traveling southbound.

As the Infiniti merged back into the roadway, it hit the left-front of the Nissan. The impact of the contact sent the Infiniti off the right side of the roadway and up an embankment before it collided with several trees.

The 35-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Infiniti, was killed in the crash, confirmed NJSP. She has since been identified as Lissanne Reyes Mejia, of Perth Amboy.

The driver of the Infiniti, Felipe Exposito-Sanchez, and three of his other passengers all suffered serious injuries.

No injuries to the Nissan driver were reported.

Authorities had the local lanes of I-287 southbound shut down for nearly five hours during the response, causing moderate delays in the area.

An investigation remains underway. No pending charges have been reported as of this writing.
