BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A 65-year-old woman was hospitalized with serious injuries Saturday night after being hit by a vehicle at a Hackensack intersection, reports local media.

Hackensack Police said the incident occurred in the area of Essex Street and Lehigh Street. Officers were dispatched to the scene at around 8:47 p.m. about a hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian.

Preliminary details gathered by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Hackensack Police indicate 77-year-old John Laiosa, of Lodi, was driving a 2019 Ford Mustang. As the victim crossed Essex Street on foot, the Mustang struck her and then fled the scene before authorities arrived.

The victim, a resident of Hackensack, suffered major bodily injuries. She was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center.

Investigators said Laiosa has since been arrested and charged with “third-degree knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, resulting in serious bodily injury.” He also received motor vehicle summonses that include “leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident” and “failure to report a motor vehicle accident.”

Released from custody on his own recognizance, he is expected to appear in Hackensack Central Judicial Processing Court.
