Pedestrian killed by hit-and-run driver on GSP in Toms River

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ — A 53-year-old Wanaque woman died Sunday evening after being struck by a vehicle on the Garden State Parkway in northeast Toms River, reports NJ.com.

The fatal incident occurred on the southbound parkway near milepost 87.2, in an area approaching Church Road. It was first reported at around 7:20 p.m.

Few details have been shared, but State Police said the woman, who was a passenger in an SUV that had pulled over, was hit by a southbound vehicle that continued driving.

The victim died from her injuries at the scene, confirmed officials.

The driver of the SUV, a 66-year-old Wanaque man, was found to have been intoxicated and was charged with drunken driving.

At this time, authorities have not released a description of the hit-and-run vehicle. An investigation remains ongoing.
