BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A Little Ferry Police officer and a Lodi woman were hospitalized Friday morning after a crash on U.S. Route 46 near central Little Ferry, reports Daily Voice.
The accident took place at the intersection with Liberty Street, shortly before 11:00 a.m.
According to the Little Ferry Police Department, an officer had the lights and sirens of his patrol vehicle activated to conduct a traffic stop. As he was making a left turn onto the eastbound lanes of Route 46 from southbound Liberty Street, his vehicle was rear-ended by a Nissan Altima driven by the Lodi woman.
Officials said the female driver had been in the middle westbound lane of Route 46 when the driver of a tractor-trailer to her right slowed down upon seeing the police car. The Lodi woman tried to drive past the big rig and tried to swerve to avoid the police vehicle, but her Nissan ended up hitting the back of the unit. The impact of the crash caused her airbags to deploy.
Both the woman and the officer were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center. Authorities said neither patient was seriously injured.
A section of the highway was shut down during the response and investigation.
