UNION COUNTY, NJ — A 64-year-old man was fatally injured early Thursday when he was struck by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter in Mountainside, according to local media.

The incident occurred at the intersection of U.S. Route 22 and New Providence Road. Mountainside Police were called to the scene at around 4:35 a.m. after receiving a report of a pedestrian hit by a motor vehicle.

Authorities said the man, a local resident, was operating a battery-powered scooter when he crossed into traffic and was hit by a 2016 Nissan.

Officers, who arrived to find the victim in the roadway, initiated life-saving measures. First responders rushed him to Overlook Medical Center in Summit, where he was pronounced deceased.

It remains unclear what led up to the crash, but the driver, a 62-year-old Plainfield woman, remained at the scene after the crash. No charges have been reported as of this writing.

An investigation remains ongoing.
