Man fatally hit by NJ Transit train near Clifton Station

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — A man died early Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a NJ Transit train in Clifton’s Athenia area, according to Daily Voice.

NJT Senior Public Information Officer Kyalo Mutumba said the fatal incident occurred on the northbound tracks just south of Clifton Station, at about 12:17 p.m.

Witnesses said the male pedestrian was extricated and administered CPR, but the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The circumstances of the crash remain unclear at this time.

The commuter train, NJ Transit Main Line Train #1113, had departed Hoboken at 11:45 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Rockland, New York. It was approaching Clifton Station when the event occurred.

Officials said about 50 customers and crew were onboard the train at the time, but no other injuries were reported.

Train service was temporarily disrupted but had resumed shortly after 2:00 p.m.  the same afternoon.

An investigation by NJ Transit police was underway.
