BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A 32-year-old New York resident was taken into custody early Saturday after a police chase ended with a crash in Paramus, reports Daily Voice.

Authorities said the wreck took place on Century Road at around 12:00 a.m.

According to the Fair Lawn Police Department, an officer observed a driver in a Mercedes Benz pass him at slow speeds on the eastbound lanes of Route 4 near Saddle River Road and tried to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle on Paramus Road. Instead of stopping, the driver made a U-turn and sped northbound. Shortly after, the Mercedes collided with a light pole at the Century Road intersection.

The driver, who was suspected of driving while intoxicated, had to be “forcibly remove[d]” from the vehicle. He was arrested and transported to Hackensack University Medical Center after complaints of crash-related pain.

His passenger was not reported injured and was released from the scene.

Authorities said the driver faces multiple charges, including “DWI, eluding, resisting arrest, reckless driving, failing to maintain a lane, failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and having no liability insurance.”

At this time, no further details have been disclosed.
