Driver flees after crash at USPS office in downtown Newark

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Property damage was reported early Wednesday after a hit-and-run crash at the United States Postal Service office in downtown Newark, according to local media.

The incident took place in the 20 block of Franklin Street, near Mulberry Street, at about 2:10 a.m. Emergency responders were called to the scene shortly after.

Newark Police said officers initially thought multiple occupants were in the vehicle following the crash, but soon learned the driver and a number of passengers had fled the scene on foot.

A section of the building sustained damage, but an estimated costs have not been released at this time.

At this time, authorities continue to search for the fleeing driver.
