ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A girl was hospitalized last Friday, October 14, after being struck by a vehicle in Newark’s Springfield/Belmont neighborhood, according to Shore News Network.

The incident occurred in the area of Springfield Avenue and Bergen Street at around 6:00 p.m.

Newark Police said the child was crossing the street when a male driver in a 2001 BMW X5 ran a red light and hit her with the car. The vehicle then fled westbound on Springfield Avenue toward Fairmont Avenue without stopping.

After being alerted by a passing motorist, a police officer arrived on the scene to find the girl laying down in the roadway and suffering from a head injury, in addition to several hand lacerations. EMS personnel attended to the victim at the scene before transporting her to University Hospital for further treatment.

At this time, authorities have not yet located the driver, but have since released a physical description of the suspect and the striking vehicle’s license plate number.
