BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Four teenagers were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after an overpacked sedan hit a utility pole and caused two fires in Upper Saddle River, reports Daily Voice.

The collision occurred near the intersection of Lake Street and Danebury Downs, just before 3:00 p.m.

According to authorities, a 17-year-old male driver from Wyckoff was driving a 2017 Honda Accord carrying seven other teens when the sedan hit the pole, causing it to collapse. High-tension wires were pulled down in the crash, causing a small power outage and two fires to break out.

No critical injuries were reported, but four teens were transported to a local hospital. One patient was said to have suffered a broken leg.

Borough firefighters were able to contain the fire, but a section of Lake Street was blocked off until about 6:00 a.m. Monday morning for repairs.

Authorities noted that the sedan was over capacity, and at least three of the occupants were not wearing seat belts at the time of the wreck. As of this writing, the driver is expected to be issued a summons.

An investigation was underway.
