OCEAN COUNTY, NJ — Three people have died following a major, car-splitting collision early Saturday in Lakewood, according to Daily Voice.

The fatal wreck occurred at the corner of Cedar Bridge Avenue and New Hampshire Avenue, at about 2:20 a.m.

Ocean County officials say four people were traveling eastbound in a 2009 Honda Accord when the car ran a red light at the intersection. Moments later, it collided with a 2008 Dodge pickup truck, causing the second vehicle to overturn and break into two pieces. Authorities said the Honda also split into two after continuing off of the roadway and hitting a metal traffic signal pole.

While the driver of the Dodge was transported to Neptune’s Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) with minor injuries, the driver and a passenger in the Honda was pronounced deceased at the scene. The three other passengers in the Honda were also rushed to JSUMC, where one of the patients succumbed to their injuries. Authorities said the two other patients remain in critical condition.

No further details have been shared at this time, but the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit – Vehicular Homicide Squad and the Lakewood Township Police Department are conducting a joint investigation.
