2 hospitalized after head-on collision near East Orange

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — At least two people were injured Saturday afternoon due to a two-vehicle wreck with entrapment at the Newark-East Orange border, according to local media.

Authorities responded to the scene in the area of Central Avenue and South 17th Street, near Newark’s Fairmount area. The incident was reported at about 2:30 p.m.

Preliminary details indicate one car was traveling eastbound on Central Avenue when it collided head-on with a westbound vehicle.

Newark first responders had to perform a rescue extrication for an unspecified number of trapped occupants.

Both involved drivers were transported to Newark’s University Hospital, where the severity of their conditions remains undisclosed.

Local police were diverting motorists away from the scene near The Division of Motor Vehicle.

No charges have been reported as of this writing. Essex County officials continue to investigate.
