ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — One person was injured Wednesday morning when a speeding vehicle hit two vehicles, including a school bus, in downtown Newark, according to local media.

The incident occurred on Branford Street, in the city’s South Broad Street neighborhood, at about 9:46 a.m.

Newark Police indicated that a driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when they attempted to maneuver their vehicle around a school bus. The speeding vehicle ultimately struck the school bus and a second car, leaving the causing vehicle severely damaged.

Authorities said 16 students and adults were aboard the school bus at the time, but no critical injuries were reported.

One person who suffered an eye injury from flying glass was transported to University Hospital, but it was unclear whether that patient had been on the bus.

Responding officers arrested at least one male suspect from the causing vehicle. No charges have been confirmed as of this writing.
