1 killed, 2 injured in two-car crash on US-1/9 NB near EWR

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A 35-year-old Weehawken resident died early Sunday after a wreck on U.S. Route 1/9 in Newark that hurt two other people, one critically, reports NJ.com.

The fatal accident happened on the northbound side of US-1/9 at McClellan Street, near Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), just before 3:30 a.m.

Details remain limited, but the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said two passenger cars collided.

First responders pronounced one of the drivers, Cheikh Faye, deceased at the scene at 3:47 a.m. Faye’s passenger, who has not been identified, was rushed to University Hospital where they were listed in critical condition Monday afternoon.

The driver of the other car, also not yet identified, was transported to Elizabeth’s Trinitas Regional Medical Center with non-fatal injuries.

No other information has been disclosed at this time as an investigation remains ongoing.
