PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — A man was fatally hurt last Wednesday, September 20, when his gas-powered scooter collided with a car during a police pursuit in Paterson, reports Daily Voice.
The crash happened at the intersection of McBride Avenue and Murray Avenue, near Pennington Park, just before 7:30 p.m.
A press released issued by New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin two days later indicates the man and a passenger were on the moped and fleeing from Totowa police in marked cars. The moped traveled on the 31st Street Bridge and took the chase over the Passaic River and into Paterson. Shortly after, the moped collided with a Lexus at McBridge and Murray Avenues.
Authorities said the moped’s male operator and his passenger were both rushed to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center. At 2:06 a.m., the moped driver was pronounced deceased, confirmed officials.
No updates on the condition of the moped passenger have been released, but their injuries, and that of the Lexus occupants, are believed to be non-life-threatening.
Because the fatal crash occurred “during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody,” state law requires the AG’s office to conduct an independent investigation, no matter the circumstances.
