1 dead after truck crashes into river in Fairfield Township

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A 60-year-old man was fatally injured late Thursday when his truck crashed off a roadway and into the Cohansey River in Fairfield Township, reports Daily Voice.

New Jersey State Police said the events unfolded off the southbound side of County Route 553 at milepost 16. It was first reported at around 11:33 p.m.

Preliminary details show the man was operating a Kenworth T880 southbound when, for reasons still being investigated, the truck veered off the right side of the roadway, slammed through the guide rail, and then plummeted into the river.

The driver, identified as Matthew Jacobs, of Bridgeton, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

His passenger, whose identity remains undisclosed, was transported to an area hospital with injuries considered moderate.

No other information has been provided at this time, as the investigation remains in progress.
