MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ — A 20-year-old man has been charged following a multi-car wreck Sunday in Old Bridge that killed one person and seriously hurt another, according to local media.
Authorities said the fatal wreck occurred at about 11:17 p.m. on a stretch of Route 18 at Ferris Road.
A preliminary investigation by the Old Bridge Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office indicates the young man, James Cannici, was driving a Nissan Rogue on Ferris Road when he turned left into the wrong side of NJ-18. Moments later, the Nissan hit a Honda Accord and a third vehicle.
A 45-year-old Sayreville woman who was a passenger in the Honda Accord died as a result of her injuries at the scene, confirmed officials. She has since been identified as Florence Akoma.
The driver of the Honda suffered serious injuries.
Cannici, who was suspected of Driving While Intoxicated, was arrested following the crash. He now faces multiple charges, including “first-degree Aggravated Manslaughter, second-degree Vehicular Homicide, third-degree Aggravated Assault and fourth-degree Assault by Auto.” He was booked into Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center where he awaits the results of a Superior Court pre-trial detention hearing.
