BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ — A 24-year-old man died Tuesday in a motorcycle crash on US-206 near Springfield during a pursuit by an off-duty State Police trooper, reports Daily Voice.
The fatal collision occurred on the southbound lanes of the highway at Jacksonville Jobstown Road (County Road 670), at around 5:00 p.m.
According to authorities, the off-duty State Police trooper had begun pursuing the motorcyclist in an unmarked car for unspecified reasons. Preliminary details show the chase reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.
A local police officer had started following both vehicles when the pursuit as headed south on Route 206. At one point, the motorcyclist was struck by a Honda CR-V making a left turn onto the highway from westbound Jacksonville Jobstown Road.
The rider was pronounced deceased on the scene, confirmed New Jersey State Police.
The driver of the Honda, who suffered minor injuries, received treatment on the scene.
At this time, New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin is reviewing the incident and the rider’s death, since it occurred “during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.”
