MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — Two women were severely injured Saturday afternoon when they were ejected during a crash on Interstate 80 in Montville, reports local media.

The accident happened on the eastbound side of I-80 at mile marker 48.3, in the Pine Brook area. It was first reported shortly before 2:00 p.m.

According to New Jersey State Police, a 26-year-old Elmwood Park woman was driving a Toyota Avalon westbound on the highway when the car veered off the left side of the roadway, traveled across the median, and then hit and went over a metal guardrail. The vehicle then entered the eastbound lanes, where it hit the left back side of an eastbound International box truck. Moments later, the Toyota was hit by the front-end of an eastbound Nissan NV.

Officials said the driver of the Toyota and her passenger, an 18-year-old Paterson resident, were both ejected during the crash and suffered severe injuries. First responders rushed the women to local hospitals, where their conditions remain unknown.

The drivers of the Nissan and the International sustained minor injuries considered non-life-threatening.

All eastbound lanes of I-80 were shut down for nearly 3.5 hours, forcing traffic to get by on the right shoulder. Significant delays were reported in the area.

An investigation was in progress.
