BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — One person died early Thursday after a fiery crash involving a vacant box truck off Route 17 in Carlstadt, according to local authorities.

Bergen County officials said the fatal accident occurred on the northbound side, near Carlstadt Ice, at around 3:30 a.m.

Preliminary details indicate a passenger car was heading northbound on NJ-17. At one point, for reasons still unknown, the vehicle veered off the roadway and rear-ended an unoccupied box truck that was parked near the Carlstadt Ice Company.

The striking vehicle burst into flames as a result. Though responding firefighters were later able to put out the flames, the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

No other injuries have been reported.

An investigation by the Carlstadt Criminal Investigations Unit remains ongoing.
