BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A local 88-year-old woman has been identified as the pedestrian who died Monday morning after being hit by a NJ Transit train in Westwood, according to Daily Voice.
The fatal incident occurred in the area of Broadway and Jefferson Avenue, near Westwood Station, at about 9:48 a.m.
It remains unclear what led up to the event, but authorities said woman, who lived a few blocks away at Madison Apartments, was traveling on foot with a wheeled walker when she was struck by the commuter train.
The victim, a former resident of Park Ridge, died on the scene as a result of her injuries.
No injuries to any of the train’s crew or 30 passengers were reported.
Officials said the striking train, Pascack Valley Line No. 1605, had departed from Hoboken at 8:56 a.m. and was scheduled for a 10:10 arrival in Spring Valley.
In the aftermath of the crash, the area around the stopped train was shut down as Westwood Police and NJ Transit investigated. Officials with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office also assisted.
Shortly after 12:45 p.m., the scene had cleared and was reopened to the public.
