PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — One person died Monday afternoon after a single-vehicle crash that injured another on Route 208 near south Hawthorne, reports Daily Voice.

The fatal collision occurred off the southbound lanes just north of Goffle Road, shortly after noon.

A preliminary investigation indicates a Toyota Camry was traveling southbound on the highway when, for reasons still unknown, it veered off the roadway. Moments later, the car went up an embankment and struck a tree.

Crews with the Hawthorne Volunteer Ambulance Corps worked to extricate two people from the wreckage of the car, which was positioned precariously on the edge of the embankment.

One person was pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed officials.

The other occupant, an elderly woman, was rushed to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center. No updates have been shared regarding the severity of her condition.

Multiple first responders, local police, firefighters, Passaic County sheriff’s officers and tow crews were also at the scene.

A section of the southbound highway was closed at Grandview Avenue during the response and investigation.
