FAIRFIELD, NJ – A pilot was left with severe injuries following a helicopter crash near Essex County Airport in Fairfield this afternoon, according to information from NJ.com.
The crash happened on the northern side of the field at around 12:11 p.m., shortly after a 2015 Bell Model 407 helicopter took off from the airport to go pick up a charter.
The pilot, who was identified as a 33-year-old man from Marietta, Georgia, was rescued from the wreckage by emergency crews. He was then taken to the hospital in Paterson with critical, severe injuries.
A fuel leak was also reported at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at this time.
